| Abstract: |
Despite great advances in information technology and Web graphics, the user experience in online discussion boards is still rudimentary and based on threads of text. Referring to previous developments in the visualization field, this study develops an original collaborative knowledge visualization and web polling tool to be deployed in a popular discussion board on the topic of an herbal antidepressant. The preliminary prototype is presented here (Fig. 1) along with the results of a pilot test, and an outline of an upcoming experiment with an improved prototype. The claim of this research is that such a collaborative knowledge visualization tool can enhance the user experience in online discussion spaces on several levels. Allowing users to directly map their own perceptions onto a graphical representation of a shared context, this “plot-poll” serves to not only amplify cognition and communication, but foster a sense of contribution, presence, belonging, and loyalty to the community.
