Knowledge management is the key success factor of today's business leaders. This article will focus on the rise of
knowledge management. It provides a summary of useful concepts, different project types, supportive organizational
structures, effective technologies and points out future knowledge management directions. In the end, the authors present
four short cases to illustrate how multinational organizations apply knowledge management concepts in their
business.

Three main characteristics of the
company in focus of this case study – a manangement consultancy – are the reason for substantial challenges for the firm:
A strong and long term increase of employees, aggressive geographic expansion, and project organisation of the business
required a systematic knowledge management strategy. In this case study employees with different levels of seniority describe
the pitfalls and successes of knowledge managementinitiatives in their company.

"The Pragmatic Development and Use of Know-how: Knowledge Management Light at Securitech Ltd."
The case study examines the possibilities and barriers of implementing
knowledge management in a small technology-driven enterprise in the area of building security with less than one hundred employees
and without major deployments of information technology. Organizational issues are discussed as well as human resources issues.
The knowledge management tools that are discussed are knowledge maps, review workshops, knowledge fairs, knowledge scorecards, and
knowledge shadow organizations.

"Set out for Knowledge Management: The Implementation in the Automotive Components AG - KM Measures and Results"
The case study is based on a project realized during nine months by an international operating supplier
for components in the automotive sector in cooperation with the Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Production Management of
the University of Kaiserslautern acting as external consultant. The case study aims on the following four targets. 1. Sensitization:
Knowledge management needs to be calibrated on the specific company and its context, there is no "the" knowledge
management, fitting everywhere. 2. Getting to know different tools and devices to implement knowledge management within companies.
3. Learning about what key factors for the success of knowledge management implementation projects are. 4. Familiarizing with an
exemplary procedure to carry out knowledge management projects.

"KM @ Pixelpark: Knowledge Management in Multimedia Projects"
The case describes
how knowledge management measures can be systematically planned and implemented in a distributed and mostly project-based
environment at a multimedia agency. The case is written from the perspective of a quality
control director. The exchange of tacit knowledge plays an important part, due to the fact that "quality" of
multimedia products is hard to measure.

Think Tools supports players of the knowledge society of the 21st centry with software
products and consulting for strategic decisions in their decision making process. It is a set of tools for illustrating
the processes and uncovering new and unthought of solutions. Think Tools‘ controversial marketing and selling strategy
has been discussed vividly in the public. By presenting the controversial opinions about Think Tools, this case shows the difficulties
of marketing knowledge products.

In the case it is shown how Team Syntegrity - an efficient tool for information sharing
and consensus building - is applied to three different problems of Knowledge Management within DASA DaimlerChrysler
Aerospace, a high-tech manufacturer of airplanes. It is not only described how the solutions where found but also how the
implementation was assured as much as possible by using a new protocol.

Delivery of result oriented KM products."
The case study describes shortly various approaches
to knowledge management(KM). Main emphasis is on how KM driven project management can help to accelerate new product
development (time to market). KM activities, their effects, and integration into daily work are described and put into
business context according to the various project phases. Implementation issues and future outlook complete the case study.

"Building Knowledge-based Business & Services"
This case highlights the
impact of knowledge management on internal processes and tools within the Mergers and Acquisitions department of Deutsche Bank
in Frankfurt. Following a survey amongst the members of the M&A group a technical database was established to more efficiently
share knowledge within the group and to broaden the base of standard documents/tools. In addition to that the filing of documents
and the processing of presentations was analysed and improved.

"Compressing Knowledge: The Re-packaging of Management Knowledge at getAbstract Inc."
The case study on getAbstract describes how knowledge in the form of business books can be compressed and how the resulting
book abstracts can be turned into a feasible business model. The case study highlights the knowledge-intensive book summary
production process and its inherent problems. It focuses on the key value-adding activities that increase the quality of
information and foster effective knowledge transfer.

"Introductory Guideline for Case Studies: How to write and teach a casestudy"
This guideline gives a structured summary on the strategy of teaching and solving business
cases and is intended to help case instructors and students prepare for the class discussions. As an introductory guideline
to the work with the case studies within this book, it describes how to dequately prepare for teaching and learning, when using
the case study approach (which is somewhat different to lecturing a class) in order to optimize the learning experience.
